Salman Khan, creator of Khan Academy, admits to skipping classes in college. Khan felt that it wasn't worth his time if the material was boring. Moreover, he found that he preferred classes that were more hands-on—those in which the professor conducted a discussion rather than gave a lecture.

This desire to engage is one of the driving ideas behind Khan Academy, he says. Khan strives to teach students through hands-on learning and an open exchange of ideas. The Academy does provide lectures, but students can stream them at their own discretion.
