If you are a high school freshman, the U.S. Department of Education encourages you to start thinking about the money you’ll need for college now. Save up some money, have an honest talk with your parents about the cost of college and your financial resources, and check out the Department of Education’s website, starting with studentaid.gov/checklist.

For high school seniors, it is important that you file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible so that you don’t miss out on any scholarships for which you might be eligible.
