US Flags Memorial Day

Memorial Day, which falls on May 30 in 2016, is a day for remembering the sacrifice of the 1.3 million members of the U.S. Armed Forces who lost their lives in combat. It's also a day for honoring the more than 42 million veterans who served the nation.

The long weekend created by this federal holiday, coming at the end of May, also marks the unofficial beginning of the summer. Nearly four out of 10 Americans are expected to be traveling this weekend, most of them by car. As Americans take to the road and fire up grills to cook hot dogs and hamburgers, Money takes a look at Memorial Day by the numbers.
