The Maytag appliance company is running a special monthlong promotion that can net shoppers up to $700 back in prepaid-card rebates. Naturally, the “Maytag Month” deal takes place in May.

Starting today and running through May 31, shoppers who purchase two or more of the brand’s home appliances at a participating retailer like Home Depot can get rebates worth $100 to $700. Home Depot's big-box rival Lowe's has its own version of the promotion going on — buyers can get the rebate form through Lowe's if they want to purchase there.

At the low end, you can get a rebate of up to $100 for buying a washer-dryer combo. The selection of applicable models includes ones in both top-load and front-load styles, as well as electric and gas-powered, depending on what kind of hookup you have in your laundry room.

The rebates grow larger if you're buying three or more Maytag appliances this month. While it's unusual for homeowners to have multiple appliances conk out simultaneously, many people do buy multiples at the same time. A reader poll by Consumer Reports found that 70% of us want our appliances to be part of a “suite,” or matched set.

Bundles of three or four Maytag appliances can get you rebates of $250 and $400, respectively. The purchase of five select Maytag kitchen appliances comes with a $600 rebate this month, and if you add on a washer-dryer deal like the one mentioned above, the total rises to $700 back.

Shoppers have plenty of models to choose from, including lots of appliances in Maytag’s “fingerprint resistant” stainless steel. The promo applies to more than two dozen cooking appliances, including countertop cooktops and wall ovens as well as regular ranges — both electric and gas-powered. The electric model below was on sale at Home Depot for $1,399 (originally $1,799) when we last checked.

A 30-inch Maytag microwave oven, meanwhile, was being discounted to $298 (down from the original $349), before any rebate was factored in:

Roughly a dozen different Maytag refrigerators, a handful of dishwashers and a trash compactor are eligible for the rebates as well.

Maytag's website page has more details on the promotion, and the rebate form has a full rundown of qualifying models.

Obviously, the smartest approach is to try to buy qualifying models when they're on sale, so that the combination of retailer discounts and manufacturer rebates provides the best possible value. So look for sales at Home Depot and other participating retailers, and make sure that the appliances you see work with the rebate.

One more thing we can’t stress strongly enough: Hang onto your paperwork. You’ll need to include receipts, model and serial numbers when you submit your rebate submission form. If you’re contemplating both a kitchen and a laundry room overhaul, get your ducks in a row. In most states, you’re limited to a single rebate form per household.

Also, don’t stick those documents in a place where you’ll forget about them: Rebate forms have to be postmarked or submitted online by June 30.
