Flash Sale: Norwegian Air Has $49 Flights to the Caribbean and $89 Airfare to Europe

Norwegian Air, the low-cost carrier that has been upending the transatlantic flight market with shockingly cheap airfare to Europe, just launched a huge sale. Prices from the U.S. to Scotland and Ireland start at only $89, and tickets to destinations such as London, Oslo, Paris, Rome, and Stockholm are going for as little as $140 each way.

There are some amazing deals to the Caribbean too, with flights from the U.S. starting at just $49 this fall.

Norwegian Air introduced the new sale to members of its email newsletter on Wednesday, but the discounted prices are already available to all travelers based on what we see.

Here are Norwegian Air's most impressive sale prices, which can be readily booked on its website right now. The prices listed below represent one-way fares.

Departures at special sale prices are generally valid for select departures in November, December, and January. In some cases, these rates are available in September and October. Note that Norwegian typically doesn't offer daily flights on transatlantic routes (three or four flights a week is more the norm), and that Norwegian's base prices cover only the cost of transportation. In other words, "extras" like seat reservations, baggage, and food and drinks on the plane aren't included.

Based on our browsing, it looks pretty difficult to find the cheapest flights in both directions. You're more likely to grab an $89 flight bound for Europe, but have to pay maybe $200 or so for the return. Even so, the deals can be extraordinary: Getting a round trip to Europe for $300, or even $400, is quite a bargain compared to how expensive airfare was not long ago. We could have booked a round trip from Newark to Rome in November for a total of only $280—and that's dirt cheap.

Even if you can't travel with Norwegian Air, the good thing is that cheap flights abound to Europe nowadays. In travel circles, today marks something celebrated as "Cheap Flight Day," when all airlines slash prices because of the end of the peak summer travel season and the arrival of a quieter, lower-demand period. What's more, Norwegian Air's low-cost rival WOW Air just introduced new service to four more U.S. cities (Cleveland, Cincinnati, Detroit, St. Louis), with tickets to its hub in Reykjavik, Iceland, starting at under $100.

As Bloomberg reported earlier this week, the presence of Norwegian and WOW in the marketplace has put enormous pressure on the larger, more established airlines to offer cheap airfare as well. The takeaway is that it's easier than ever to find airfare deals to Europe, no matter how or where you fly.
