New Year's Day 2018 falls on a Monday, so most offices are closed for the holiday, and the vast majority of workers have the day off.

However, people who work in the restaurant and retail fields don't necessarily get New Year's Day as a holiday—and Jan. 1 is often a busy day for shopping and eating out.

Here are some more specific details concerning what stores you can expect to be open and closed on New Year's Day 2018.

What stores are open on New Year's Day?

Jan. 1 is traditionally a busy shopping day, and the vast majority of malls and major retailers will be open on New Year's Day 2018. So feel free to hit your local shopping center to return gifts or use up those holiday gift cards you received at Walmart, Target, Macy's, Best Buy, or virtually any other store.

As you'd guess, nearly all 24/7/365 convenience stores and drugstore chains—like 7-Eleven, Wawa, CVS, and Walgreens—will be open on New Year's Day. Most supermarkets, including chains like Publix, Safeway, Kroger, and Whole Foods, are open on New Year's Day as well, although some have limited holiday hours.

There are some exceptions, however. Among them, Costco is closed on New Year's Day, and all locations for Aldi grocery stores are closed on New Year's Day.

What restaurants are open on New Year's Day?

Restaurants tend to work on schedules that are similar to the retail world. In other words, when most stores are open, most restaurants are as well. In this case, what this means is that the vast majority of restaurants are open on New Year's Day 2018.

Some restaurants may have limited holiday hours on January 1, though, so check locally to see when they're open. For example, Chick-fil-A says that most locations are open only from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on New Year's Day 2018.

Are banks and the stock market open on New Year's Day?

Monday, Jan. 1, 2018, is an official federal holiday, and nearly all banks will be closed on New Year's Day. (Most ATMs will still be accessible, however, for your banking needs that don't require human interaction.)

Likewise, the stock market is closed on New Year's Day 2018.

What else is closed on New Year's Day?

Again, New Year's Day is a federal holiday, so you can assume that all non-essential federal facilities are closed, as are nearly all schools. The Post Office will be closed on Jan. 1, 2018, and regular mail will not be delivered.
