One of the most anticipated Senate committee hearings is scheduled to begin on Thursday morning, featuring testimony from Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford, the woman who has accused the judge of sexually assaulting her when they were teenagers.
Today’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing starts at 10 a.m., and Ford — now a professor of psychology at Palo Alto University — will testify first. According to her prepared testimony that’s been released before the hearing, Ford will recall an event from 1982 that “drastically altered my life.”
Ford says that at a house party, Brett Kavanaugh and another young man pulled her into a bedroom. Kavanaugh pushed her onto the bed, got on top of her, and put his hand over her mouth so she could not scream, Ford says. “Brett groped me and tried to take off my clothes,” Ford will say, according to her statement.
Kavanaugh has vehemently denied the allegations made by Ford, as well as those of at least three other women who allege the Supreme Court nominee engaged in sexual misconduct in the past.
Kavanaugh’s testimony will follow Ford’s appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee. He will say that he “immediately, unequivocally, and categorically” denies Ford’s accusations, and that he has never sexually assaulted anyone “not in high school, not in college, not ever,” according to a prepared statement.
Both Ford and Kavanaugh will face questions after their prepared testimony. Kavanaugh’s toughest questions are expected to be asked by Democratic members of the committee. Ford will be questioned not by Republican Senators but by Rachel Mitchell, a prosecutor from Arizona hired by Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
