Montclair State University

Montclair, NJwww.montclair.edu
One of the top public universities in New Jersey, Montclair State has an above-average graduation rate of 65%. The college was founded as a training school for teachers, and its education programs remain popular and well-regarded. Among the school's approximately 50 majors, 60 minors, and 60 concentrations, top majors include business administration, psychology, and biology. The campus is relatively diverse, except geographically: Almost all of its roughly 21,000 students are from New Jersey. Montclair State is trying to shake its reputation as a commuter school -- only about 30% of the approximately 17,000 undergraduates currently live on the 252-acre campus, which students say is beautiful and quiet. But it's also only a 14-mile trip (from a train station on campus) to New York City. During the school's annual College Olympics, students are placed on teams based on their college or school and compete in events like dodgeball and volleyball. Greek life plays a notable role in the Montclair social scene, though students must maintain a GPA of 2.7 or above in order to participate.
