University of Rochester

Rochester, NYwww.rochester.edu
The University of Rochester is a private research university in upstate New York, with about 6,200 undergraduates and another 3,600 grad students. Students come from all 50 states and about 70 countries around the world. Undergraduates can choose from some 75 majors in the School of Arts & Sciences, Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, School of Nursing, Warner School of Education, School of Medicine and Dentistry, Simon Business School, and the world-famous Eastman School of Music. The Rochester Curriculum, as it's called, has no mandatory courses for undergraduates, but does require that they take a number of classes outside of their major. The music school is named for George Eastman, founder of Eastman Kodak and a major benefactor of the university. The 154-acre main campus sits along the Genesee River, a short walk from downtown Rochester, and is known for its distinctive, and very collegiate, brick architecture. Students can join about 250 clubs and about 20 varsity sports. In the annual Pumpkin Launch, held near Halloween, students catapult pumpkins into the air using devices they designed themselves. Before graduating, many students attempt to complete a "101 Things to Do Before You Graduate" bucket list, which ranges from sledding down a prominent hill in winter to pulling an all-nighter in Gleason Library.
