Age: 48 and 52
Hometown: Indianapolis
Cause: Career education and financial literacy for girls

Orr has been volunteering at Girls Inc. for eight years, Hicks for five, but it wasn’t until 2011 that the two teamed up as teachers. Girls Inc. is a national organization that inspires 6- to 18-year-olds to be “strong, smart, and bold” through six-week programs on financial literacy, college preparation and non-traditional careers. In their sessions with youngsters, the women discuss professions in terms of salaries and the cost of education. Passionate about the message that girls can be anything they want if they’re financially savvy — Orr is a corporate controller, and Hicks is a chemical engineer — they also serve on the board of the Indianapolis area affiliate of Girls Inc. Since 2011, the population served by the local chapter has more than doubled to 4,737.

Says Orr:

Many girls think they need a man to take care of them, particularly if they are socio-economically on the low end. They don’t get the message that they can be strong in their own skin.”
