A vacation can give your relationship a well-needed lift while a newlywed weekend vacation can help you start your marriage off on a high note.

But more young couples are skimping on long honeymoons and opting for weekend getaways, called mini-moons, said Bob Jacobs, vice president of brand management at Westin Hotels & Resorts. GoBankingRates looked at destinations couples are booking and found affordable packages and adventures, whether for a full-fledged honeymoon, mini-moon or spontaneous getaway.

1. Vermont

The Green Mountain state is an easy getaway from the crowded urban corridor of the Northeast. Take a one-hour flight from New York to a serene countryside of mountain resorts, wine trails and rolling hills. Ride the Lake Champlain bikeways network, visit the Vermont State Fair in August or hike the Long Trail.

The Mountain Top Inn & Resort in Chittenden is a wedding destination that offers a Moonlight in Vermont two-night package for couples starting at $1,060. The package includes a couples massage, scenic boat, candlelit dinner and use of the resort’s amenities, which includes kayaking, a private lakefront beach and more.

Southern California offers world-famous beaches, tours of Universal Studios and concerts at the Hollywood Bowl.

The Ritz-Carlton in Lake Tahoe offers a mountain retreat by the lake. Its romance package includes a 50-minute couples massage, a $100 resort credit and late checkout. A two-night stay is required and rates for the package start at $599 per night. For beach lovers, the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego has a Bed & Breakfast package perfect for a mini-moon. Accommodations include breakfast buffets at Sheerwater, which overlooks the Pacific Ocean. Package rates start at $349 through September.

4. Mexico

A short drive to the border for some Americans, Mexico is a budget-friendly alternative for couples looking to escape for a weekend. Rates, dining and shopping are usually more affordable than U.S. destinations, and the country’s coasts are lined with resorts that make honeymooning in Mexico simple and alluring.

Honeymooners or couples on a romantic weekend getaway can head to Cancun for shopping, beaches and expeditions to Mayan ruins. Many resorts there are all-inclusive, giving couples a chance to relax with most amenities within reach. Go snorkeling with sea lions in the Sea of Cortez and whale watching off Mazatlan.

Hacienda Encantada in Cabo San Lucas has an Only You honeymoon package that includes a gourmet romantic dinner with a bottle of wine, a couple’s massage and shuttles for day shopping on Luxury Avenue. Rates start at $639 per night.
