Stores have tricks that trap you into spending more money than you plan, reports millennial money expert Stefanie O’Connell. The lighting, the smell of the store, the music—these all are configured so that you spend more time in the store…and buy more stuff. Stores strategically place objects to catch your eye while you are standing in the checkout line. But you can fight back. Before you go shopping, make a list and stick to that list. And if something else catches your eye, ask yourself, “Do I really need this? Would I want this if it were at another store?”
