With nearly 10,000 undergraduates and a 380-acre campus, Farmingdale State College is a crucial part of the SUNY system. It's located on Long Island, only an hour from New York City, and as a result, is packed with students from nearby Queens, Nassau and Suffolk counties. Commuters are common, but no matter where they live, students can take advantage of over 40 undergraduate degree programs and fascinating classes. Caribbean cultures, Gas turbine engines, sports economics, herbaceous plants, and the Latin American novel are a few of the options being offered this fall. Hoping to get involved? There are scores of student organizations to join, including a 3D printing club, a horticulture club, and a wrestling club. Or simply walk around and enjoy the Teaching Gardens, which have themed sections. (A particularly good Instagram account exists for the Sustainable Garden, with behind-the-scenes photos and alerts on garlic and flower sales.) Off campus, students can head into Manhattan for an experience that's decidedly less green but fun all the same, with Broadway shows, outdoor concerts, art museums, and much more.
