Saint Vincent College

A Catholic institution, Saint Vincent College was the first Benedictine college in the country when it was founded in 1846. Its historical ties to the Saint Vincent monastery continue to this day, and about 15% of faculty members are Benedictine priests or brothers. There are over 50 undergraduate majors and nearly 10 graduate programs to choose from, and the school has an 11 to 1 student-faculty ratio. In recent years, the most popular majors have been education, business administration, and biology. Saint Vincent also has strong programs in political science and theology. Nearly all students receive hefty financial aid from the college: the average grant is close to $20,000. Since 1981, the college’s Threshold Series has brought more than 80 well-known cultural and academic figures to speak to students and community members, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Neil deGrasse Tyson, and most recently, film producer Thomas Tull. The Bearcats compete in 20 Division III sports, and the college also has a special connection to the Pittsburgh Steelers. For half a century, the pro football team has spent its month-long summer training camp there.
