To replace my house key was no big deal. It cost less than $5 at my local hardware store. But to get a new car key? I quickly learned that would be considerably more expensive and time-consuming. My jaw dropped when I heard the quote from the dealer who originally sold me my 2022 Toyota Highlander hybrid. It would cost $250 for the fob, $44 for the key and cutting, then $160 for programming. Add in tax, and I’d be out more than $500. To replace a single key. A quick online search confirmed numbers like that, while shocking, are fairly standard. Sean Tucker, managing editor at Kelley Blue Book, says the price you pay reflects the need for security. “There’s always a technology war between car companies and car thieves,” he writes in an email to Money. “The latest key fobs are surprisingly high-tech, using a constantly-changing encryption code, to try to foil thieves who use devices that mimic a key fob. That means they are, effectively, tiny computers transmitting signals.” The relative newness of your car matters for the price range, too. Key fob technology evolves with every new car generation, Tucker adds, so older cars tend to have simpler, less expensive technology. ## I don’t want to pay the dealership price. What are my lower-cost options? Many Redditors suggested shopping around for a quote from an automotive locksmith or local hardware store. Ace Hardware, for example, advertises replacement keys for a variety of automakers including Ford, Toyota and Hyundai for 50% less than locksmiths or dealerships — without hidden fees. With most third-party locksmiths, customers order a blank key, then get it professionally cut and programmed to their specific vehicle. For me, this meant two trips to Costco and a total cost of just under $300. ## Does car insurance cover key fob replacement? Most standard [car insurance](https://money.com/pr/vee246a61ca9?utm_campaign=editorial&utm_content=%7B%7BcampaignName%7D%7D&utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter&encoded_id=&apxa1=homepage) policies and [car warranties](https://money.com/pr/ne3a50d02db9?utm_campaign=editorial&utm_content=%7B%7BcampaignName%7D%7D&utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter&encoded_id=&apxa1=homepage) don’t typically cover lost key replacement. Some insurance providers offer add-ons which specifically pay to fix or replace lost, stolen or damaged keys and fobs. Sky-high costs seem to be the norm for now, but there is hope as key technology advances: Some newer [luxury cars](https://money.com/best-luxury-cars/) use an owner’s phone in place of a key fob entirely. These models utilize either near field communication (similar to tap-to-pay), longer-range ultra-wide band (works like a key fob in your purse or pockets) or Bluetooth. Some even let users [grant someone else temporary access](https://www.digitaltrends.com/phones/google-wallet-now-lets-you-share-your-digital-car-key-with-custom-permission-levels/) through their phone, so you can lend a virtual key to a guest or service provider. “I’d personally like one less thing to lose,” Tucker writes.
