**Why it’s a winner:** The top flat interest rate on a fee-free account, with some sweet perks. For six months in a row of deposits, you get a 2.5% bonus on ­interest; and no withdrawals for six months earns you 2.5% on six months’ earned interest. Together, these boosts can raise your ­effective APY to 1%.

**Caveats:** For those with high balances, TCF beats Barclays, with a 1.09% yield on over $10,000. Also, ­Barclays does not offer checking.
