Tech mogul Elon Musk is planning to give nearly every child in the U.S. a share of SpaceX stock in 2027.

Musk made the pledge Monday on his [social media website X](https://x.com/elonmusk/status/2112089556615123114), hinting that additional rounds of stock donations could follow.

“Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America,” Musk wrote. “This will be the first of many.”

Musk did not post additional details about the donation, but President Donald Trump [said later on Monday](https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/117469511233475082) that the donation would be facilitated through [Trump Accounts](https://money.com/trump-accounts-for-kids/).

One of the president’s marquee economic policy initiatives, Trump Accounts are similar to custodial retirement accounts for minors. They were created by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and began rolling out in July. All children who are U.S. citizens with Social Security numbers can qualify for a free account.

But not every child in the U.S. is an American citizen; thus, not every kid will be able to receive a share of SpaceX stock.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury has recently begun [automatically creating accounts](https://money.com/trump-accounts-auto-enrollment-claim/) for qualifying children. Last month, it created 60 million accounts, and before that, roughly 7 million families had opened accounts through manual enrollment.

Automatic account creation was implemented, in part, to incentivize donations and make it easier for the federal government to distribute them to everyone who qualifies, the Treasury said.

Assuming SpaceX stock continues to trade around $150 per share, Musk’s donation would equate to $10 billion.

In a Truth Social post, Trump thanked Musk for his “incredible generosity.”

“This is exactly what was envisioned when we created TRUMP ACCOUNTS — Bringing together the great private sector, Elon and so many more, to invest in our children,” Trump wrote.

## What to know about donations to Trump Accounts

Nearly every child in the U.S. is in line to receive a share of SpaceX, whether parents have already set up an account or not. With the new automatic account creation process in place, Trump Accounts are ready to accept broad donations on behalf of children, including cash and stock contributions.

For stock donations, shares must be held for at least five years — or until the beneficiary turns 18 — before being sold or traded, whichever comes sooner.

Musk’s donation announcement follows a major investment from the Dell family of Dell Technologies. Susan and Michael Dell appeared at the Oval Office earlier in October to affirm their pledge of $6.25 billion into 25 million Trump Accounts. On Oct. 7, the Dell family said 10 million accounts had already received $250 each.

Automatically created accounts are able to accept this donation, too, without any action from families. However, to manage the funds and invest them, the Trump Account must be claimed by a parent, guardian or the beneficiary once they turn 18.

The account activation process is currently done through the [Trump Accounts app](https://money.com/trump-accounts-app-launch/).

"Using the Trump Accounts app, parents will need to verify their identity, verify their relationship with their child, review their child’s information and accept the terms," a Treasury official previously told Money.

Until the account is fully claimed, it can accept only broad donor contributions. Unclaimed accounts can’t receive contributions from family members, friends and employers, for instance.

Crucially, unclaimed accounts aren’t eligible for the one-time seed money contribution from the federal government, either. To qualify for the $1,000 payment for newborns, the child must be a U.S. citizen born between Jan. 1, 2025, and Dec. 31, 2028, and a parent or guardian must fully activate the account to accept the contribution, while funding lasts.

Elon Musk unveiled his SpaceX donation plan after a public spat with Claude-maker Anthropic. The AI firm said it will donate 5% of company shares to a “public benefit fund” with the aim to help mitigate AI-related job loss.

Musk criticized the plan, telling the company that it should give its donation directly to Americans instead of a benefit fund. Then Musk said he was going to do just that.

Musk’s $10 billion stock pledge came two weeks before the Nov. 3 midterm elections, as several states began early voting. A previous advisor to the Trump administration, Musk has been a major supporter of Republicans, donating more than $350 million to GOP groups ahead of the midterms.
