Fresno Pacific University

Sponsored by the Mennonite Brethren Church, this roughly 4,000-student university in Fresno, Calif., tends to draw students who are the first in their family to attend college. There are about 1,300 graduate students, and the undergrads are split between traditional four-year undergraduate degree seekers and adults in a flexible school program that balances academics with family or job responsibilities. FPU's most popular majors include kinesiology, psychology, and liberal studies. Fresno Pacific's student body is extremely diverse, with more than 40% of people identifying as Hispanic; FPU has actually been named a Hispanic-Serving Institution. About two-thirds of students are women. Diversity is also celebrated in other ways at FPU. Every November, the school hosts a Thanksgiving lunch that features dishes from all the countries represented in the student body. Before the lunch, the international students walk in a Parade of Nations, carrying their home country's flag, some even wearing traditional clothing. FPU students also flock to sports: The Sunbirds have 15 Division II teams; they have coincidentally won a total of 15 national titles.
