Midlothian, Virginia

With a history that dates back more than three centuries, Midlothian is now a fast-growing Richmond suburb. Though its origins are as a coal mining center, large-scale residential growth started in the 1970s, with newcomers drawn by the charm of the quiet Virginia countryside and friendly Southern community, as well as the modest cost of living.

The expansion has brought low unemployment, healthy job growth, and a steadily growing set of resources for residents. The John Tyler Community College came to Midlothian in 2000, and a historic park for walking and picnics was opened in 2006. The local YMCA has expanded its facilities as well. Beyond new residential development, the community also has several historic homes and buildings. —Sergei Klebnikov
