Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and Republican nominee Donald Trump sparred over numerous pocketbook topics—including how much the president should know about money and running a business—in last night's first presidential debate at Hofstra University in New York.

During the debate, [Trump declared,](https://money.com/trump-clinton-debate-money-quotes/) "it's about time that we had somebody running this country that knows something about money."

Clinton challenged Trump's claims, referencing his unreleased tax returns and [questionable business practices](https://money.com/donald-trump-brand-foot-traffic-foursquare/).
