Presidents Day is a national holiday that falls on Feb. 15 this year. It is officially recognized by the U.S. government as George Washington’s Birthday, but many states also celebrate other presidents during this day.

Since Presidents Day is a federal holiday, the New York Stock Exchange, NASDAQ and SIFMA are all closed, meaning many U.S. workers have the day off. Consequently, this holiday has turned into a huge three-day weekend for retailers and many offer highly competitive Presidents Day sales to entice customers.

Maximize Your Savings on Presidents Day

“Department stores typically offer the biggest discounts during Presidents Day weekend,” said Mark Mazza, co-founder and CEO of online deal site PromoCodeWatch.

According to Mazza, big ticket items are usually the most deeply-discounted items on Presidents Day weekend. In 2015, he said retailers offered up to 80% off furniture and home appliances, and savings for apparel averaged 60%, with the biggest markdowns on winter apparel.

“Electronic deals are not as prevalent with the exception of HDTVs,” Mazza said. “Presidents Day is one of the best times to get a TV. The Super Bowl will have come and gone, so many stores like Walmart and Best Buy will offer name brand TVs at their lowest prices of the year.”

To maximize your savings, Mazza recommended shopping for Presidents Day deals at department stores that allow coupon stacking, such as Target and Kohl’s. GOBankingRates also found some of the best Presidents Day freebies and sales for 2016 with the help of PromoCodeWatch, RetailMeNot and DealsPlus.
