Speaking with a Social Security representative or driving to a local office for a simple task can take time out of your day, but you may not have to go in person.

Thanks to recent enhancements to the Social Security Administration’s (SSA’s) online tools, you can complete many routine transactions involving Social Security cards and benefits from home. You can either go to [SSA.gov](https://www.ssa.gov/) or log into your “my Social Security” account to get them done.

## More Social Security business can be handled online

A personal online “my Social Security account” gives you a snapshot of your benefits and lets you address a wide range of tasks. You don’t have to visit a local office for various tasks that you can do within your online portal.

The SSA recently [enhanced](https://www.ssa.gov/blog/en/posts/2026-05-12.html) its online offerings and announced [new online tools](https://www.ssa.gov/news/en/press/releases/2026-07-21.html) for disability-related claims. Online accounts come with around-the-clock access to personalized services, such as retirement benefit estimates and setting up or changing your direct deposit information.

While local offices are still necessary for some tasks, the online portal can replace others, especially when it comes to identity-verification requests. When filling in Social Security’s [appointment tool](https://www.ssa.gov/manage-benefits/make-an-appointment), it will tell you if the task can be completed online instead.

## Tasks you may not need an appointment for

You may still have to get on the phone or visit a local office for some issues and tasks. However, these are some of the things you can do without scheduling an appointment:

- Request a replacement Social Security card, if eligible
- Request a replacement Medicare card
- Apply for retirement, disability or Medicare benefits
- Check the status of an application or appeal
- Print a benefit verification letter
- View an earnings history and Social Security Statement
- Change an address or phone number
- Set up or change direct deposit for benefits
- Access SSA-1099 tax forms and review benefit information

Earlier in the year, Social Security [announced](https://www.ssa.gov/blog/en/posts/2026-02-23.html) a streamlined process for people who need an original Social Security card or a replacement. However, a visit to the office may still be necessary in some cases.

## When you may still need to deal with a Social Security office

Although the online portal is a useful resource, you may still have to visit your local office if you cannot prove your identity online, especially for direct deposits. That’s why an online Social Security account is an incredibly useful resource once you have Social Security. However, you can also use it as a planning tool to estimate your benefit before you claim it.

A phone call may be sufficient for some appointments, but you may also have to schedule a visit to your local office by calling 1-800-722-1213. You can speak with a representative on the phone on weekdays from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm local time. You can also schedule appointments through an online form.

If you aren’t sure, you can always check Social Security’s [official online services page](https://www.ssa.gov/onlineservices/). This resource lets you know which tasks can be fulfilled through your online portal instead of at the office. The SSA’s system often lets you know the next steps if a task cannot be resolved online.
