Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Checking Account?
A checking account is a deposit account held at a financial institution that allows deposits and withdrawals. It provides easy access to your money for daily transactions like paying bills, making purchases with a debit card, or writing checks. Checking accounts are one of the most common types of bank accounts and are designed for frequent, everyday use rather than long-term savings.
How do Checking Accounts Work?
Checking accounts work by allowing you to deposit money through direct deposit, mobile check deposit, or cash deposits, and then access those funds through debit card transactions, ATM withdrawals, online transfers, and bill pay. Your bank tracks all deposits and withdrawals, and you can monitor your balance through online banking or mobile apps. Many checking accounts come with features like overdraft protection, fraud alerts, and fee-free ATM networks.
What is a High Yield Checking Account?
A high yield checking account offers a higher interest rate than traditional checking accounts, allowing your money to grow while remaining fully accessible. Unlike regular checking accounts that offer little to no interest, high yield checking accounts can offer APYs several times higher than the national average. These accounts are often offered by online banks and fintech companies like SoFi, which can pass on savings from lower overhead costs to customers in the form of better rates.
How to Pick the Best Checking Account
When choosing a checking account, consider these key factors: fees (look for accounts with no monthly maintenance fees), interest rates (high yield accounts can earn significantly more), ATM access (a large fee-free ATM network saves money), direct deposit features (like early paycheck access), FDIC insurance coverage, mobile banking tools, and any sign-up bonuses. The best checking account balances competitive rates with low fees and convenient features that match your banking habits.
