Bates College is a small New England liberal arts school with a tight-knit student body. It has about 1,800 undergraduate students, and it boasts a 10:1 student-to-faculty ratio.
Despite its small size, Bates students can choose from one of the 36 majors and 24 minors available, including economics, politics, theater and dance. The school's academic programs follow a unique structure; there are two traditional semesters, and one short term in the spring. During this period — which lasts for four weeks in May — students can take a single course or focus on a research project. This structure allows students to engage in fieldwork or intensive research (and enjoy the fine spring weather).
Bates College charges a single fee that includes tuition, room and board and school fees. As of the 2024-2025 academic year, the fee is about $85,000. However, Bates does have substantial financial aid available. In fact, about four in 10 undergraduate students receive grants or scholarships, with the average package totaling $52,190.
On the weekends, Batesies find entertainment at school-sponsored events or parties in the student houses on Frye Street. Outdoorsy types can enjoy hiking, biking, skiing and other adventurous pursuits.
