As an Army intelligence officer deployed to such areas as Bosnia and post-Katrina New Orleans, the captain, armed with an MBA, took time to counsel soldiers under his command about money. He left the military in 2007 and now teaches management at Robert Morris University. After doing free tax prep for low-income clients in 2012, he started training fellow local volunteers in tax issues specific to soldiers and veterans. The crew has assisted hundreds of filers over the past three years, helping them obtain over $500,000 in refunds.
Says Minutolo:
Many of our student volunteers have not experienced the economic challenges veterans face. It's an eye-opener for them."
