Between room and board and classes, going to college is expensive. But it gets even more expensive because of all the little things colleges tack onto your bill, explains Lynnette Khalfani-Cox. STEM field majors, theater majors and art majors may find that they pay a little extra to study on campus. Extracurricular activities can also cost. Joining a fraternity or a sorority can run up a bill of $1,000 or more. And the final thing that makes college so expensive? Textbooks.
