The best hospitals for geriatric care have a track record of providing high-quality care to older adults and employ some of the top geriatric physicians, nurses and specialists in the country.

Money's 2025 ranking favors medical centers that received strong scores from both federal regulators and patients. Staff at these facilities not only excel in their field but are also excellent communicators. 

Hospitals are rewarded in our score for having accredited geriatric emergency departments – as in those recognized for infrastructure that accommodates older patients and that are staffed by providers who have received specialized geriatric education.

We also grade each organization’s billing and pricing practices using our unique price transparency analysis. This grade, which reflects how closely final bills for hospital stays have compared with the hospital's publicly listed prices, is shown in our listing but not factored into a hospital’s score.

After our calculations, the candidate hospitals were individually vetted by Money staff for potential red flags (such as aberrant failures in service) that might not be evident in the numbers.
