Krispy Kreme doughnuts donuts
Matthew Horwood—Alamy

It's probably best not to spend much time trying to make sense of why Krispy Kreme would celebrate one of the strangest made-up holidays, Talk Like a Pirate Day. (Was the company founded by pirates? Did pirates eat donuts?) Instead, let's focus on what Talk Like a Pirate Day means at Krispy Kreme: free donuts.

As has become custom, Krispy Kreme is offering one free donut to each customer who talks like a pirate on this annual event, which takes place every September 19—Saturday of this weekend. Inserting an "Arrrrrr!" or a "Shiver me timbers" into your order is all that's necessary to secure a free donut. Referring to employees or fellow customers as "scallywags" or "landlubbers" will do the trick too. No pillaging or looting required.

For even more free donuts, you must fully embrace the holiday and go Full Pirate. If you dress up in a pirate costume—including at least three pirate garments, such as a bandana, peg leg, pirate hat, and eyepatch—Krispy Kreme will give you a full dozen donuts for free.

We know what you're thinking: Yo, ho! Yo, ho! A pirate's life for me!
