Walmart, for its part, is hosting hiring events [across](https://www.cleburnetimesreview.com/news/walmart-hosting-hiring-event-in-cleburne/article_96fd936c-3c0f-11ec-a82f-2b929f377fb9.html) [the](https://www.5newsonline.com/article/entertainment/events/walmart-to-host-nationwide-hiring-event-november-4-and-november-3/527-85427ce4-25b5-437a-b9fe-05ac42a7de35) [country](https://www.wltx.com/article/news/local/walmart-olddominion-hiring/101-b4ccc4da-7ea8-4465-9955-73a0b1fa2095) in an attempt to [hire thousands of workers](https://corporate.walmart.com/newsroom/2021/09/29/walmart-to-hire-150-000-associates-to-serve-customers-for-holidays-and-beyond) ahead of the holidays. As of the end of August, there were 10.4 million job openings, according to the [U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics](https://www.bls.gov/news.release/jolts.nr0.htm). This is a very different scene from last year, when millions of workers were still out of work from the layoffs that hit with COVID-19, and [seasonal work was seen as a lifeline](https://money.com/seasonal-jobs-temp-work/) for many. The retail giant isn't alone: A September [survey](https://go.manpowergroup.com/meos) from staffing firm ManpowerGroup found that 9% of employers worldwide said they are eliminating job screenings or drug tests in order to attract and retain talent. Meanwhile, business leaders are [calling for the removal of four-year college degrees](https://www.wsj.com/articles/some-ceos-suggest-dropping-degree-requirements-in-hiring-11620233566?mod=article_inline) for positions that often require them. Now, many companies are trying to hire hundreds of thousands of workers for a holiday season that will likely be plagued by shipping woes and [supply chain shortages](https://money.com/holiday-shortages-toys-turkey-wine/). Employers need workers so badly they're offering up [huge bonuses](https://money.com/jobs-with-signing-bonus/): Amazon is giving seasonal hires [an extra $3,000](https://money.com/amazon-seasonal-job-bonus-2021/) this year, and [Dollar General drivers](https://newscenter.dollargeneral.com/news/dollar-general-continues-nationwide-hiring-efforts.htm) who are brought on through January will net an extra $5,000. Meanwhile, some businesses, like [Target](https://money.com/target-employees-free-college-tuition/?amp%3Bref=%2Fworkers-quitting-jobs%2F), are [offering college tuition](https://money.com/employee-benefits-tuition-assistance-college/) to full- and part-time employees. [Experts say seasonal workers have the upper hand](https://money.com/seasonal-jobs-2021-higher-pay/) this year when it comes to negotiating what they want.
