The huge majority of Washington State University students come from within the state, and most will agree that the WSU experience is well worth the cost of admission. WSU's former reputation as a party school appears to be fading. Current students say that classes are challenging and that professors take time to get to know them both inside and outside of the classroom. Particularly ambitious incoming students can apply to WSU's Honors College. WSU offers close to 100 undergraduate majors, and students with an eye toward travel should check out the university's study abroad programs, with options in more than 48 countries. The university's sprawling campus and large student body (about 21,000 students) dominate the small town of Pullman. Nightlife may be lacking in the college town, but the scenic Palouse area more than makes up for it with vibrant and beautiful outdoor landscapes to explore. Check out Palouse Falls State Park to see canyons, rivers, and waterfalls. Plus, the school offers a wealth of student activities and organizations. Athletes can take advantage of intramural sports like sand volleyball and golf, while spectators can check out official Cougars basketball and football games. As for WSU's party scene, the fraternity houses are regular hangouts for students under 21, while the bars, such as the Coug, are popular with the 21-and-over crowd.
