Why Didn't NBC Stream the Golden Globes Anywhere?

La La Land won big and Meryl Streep took a stand at Sunday night's 74th annual Golden Globe awards—but if you don't have cable (or a wireless antenna) you likely missed out on awards season's kickoff event.

NBC did not make the show available on streaming services like Sling and DirecTV, which many publications (including this one) had advised cord cutters to test out. What's more, the Globes were also blacked out on NBC.com and the NBC app.

In an age of decreasing awards show audience numbers, it was an odd move on NBC's part, though not unprecedented (the network didn't stream the 2016 awards, either).

A representative for NBCUniversal did not respond to a request for comment as to why the show was unavailable.

Unsurprisingly, those who signed up for a free trial or paid for services like Sling were displeased with NBC.

As The Hollywood Reporter notes, ABC allows those with a cable login to access the Emmys on its website, as does CBS with the Grammy Awards.
