The company [announced](https://www.toysrusinc.com/press/toysrus-inc-commences-court-supervised-processes-to-implement-financial-restructuring) late Monday that it has filed for bankruptcy protection to restructure $5 billion of long-term debt as it struggles with intense competition. Ahead of the holiday gift-buying rush, the retailer urged customers to keep shopping online and in its roughly 1,600 Toys ‘R’ Us and Babies 'R' Us brick-and-mortar stores around the world. “As the holiday season ramps up, our physical and web stores are open for business, and our team members around the world look forward to continuing to put huge smiles on children’s faces,” Dave Brandon, the company’s chairman and CEO, said in a statement.
