Veterans Day is celebrated as an official federal holiday every year. But because Nov. 11 falls on a Saturday in 2017, there is some confusion as to how and when the holiday is being observed.

Obviously, schools are closed on Veterans Day itself this year; it's a Saturday after all. But many schools are closed on Friday in observance of the holiday. It's also not immediately clear what's open and what's closed in terms of banks, the post office, and such. Here's what's up.

Are Schools Open or Closed?

As mentioned, schools around the country will be closed on Veterans Day 2017 because it lands on a Saturday. But schools in many districts do not have classes on Friday due to the holiday. Among others, schools in Los Angeles, Boston, Seattle, and Washington, D.C., are not in session on Friday, November 10.

On the other hand, schools in places like Atlanta, Denver, New York City, and Orange County, Fla., are open as usual on Friday. Check your local school district's website to see if schools are open or closed.

Are Banks Open on Friday and Saturday?

Most banks will be open for business like usual on Friday, Nov. 10, but will be closed on Saturday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veterans Day.

For example, Wells Fargo tells Money that its bank branch locations are open for normal hours on Friday, but are closed on Saturday for Veterans Day. The same goes for branch locations from the likes of HSBC, First Citizens Bank, Chase, and People's United Bank: They are open on Friday and closed Saturday.

A few banks are keeping branches open on both days, however. TD Bank, for example, says that its branches are open for normal business hours this weekend, including Saturday hours.

Will Government Offices Be Open?

Because Veterans Day is a Saturday this year, the Friday before it is being celebrated as an official federal holiday. That means all non-essential government offices, such as National Archives facilities and Passport Agency buildings, are closed this Friday.

Is the Post Office Open? Will Mail Be Delivered?

There is conflicting information out there concerning post office hours and the postal service this weekend. Post offices are normally closed on the day that a federal holiday is observed—which is Friday, Nov. 10, this year. But Money reached out to a U.S. Postal Service representative, and he confirmed that there will be regular mail delivery and post offices will be open like usual on Friday. On Saturday, Nov. 11, however, post offices will be closed and mail will not be delivered in honor of Veterans Day.

Is the Stock Market Open or Closed?

The New York Stock Exchange will operate as usual on Friday, Nov. 10. It's closed for normal trading every weekend on Saturday and Sunday; Veterans Day 2017 is no exception.
