Raises tend to be incremental, around 3% this year, but if you change companies, you could negotiate your salary much higher than that. A higher starting salary has repercussions down the line, like saving more for retirement. Do some reconnaissance about the company's salary ranges if you can. And remember: "Any time someone hires you, it's not about you; it's about them," says Hannon. "It's what you can do for them."
