When is Presidents' Day in 2019? Well, it's today: Monday, February 18, 2019, is a federal holiday colloquially known as Presidents' Day.

But, officially, the holiday being celebrated — and the reason why non-essential federal workers and agencies have the day off — is actually George Washington's Birthday.

Washington was born on February 22, 1732. His neighbor on Mount Rushmore, Abraham Lincoln, was born on February 12, 1809. Rather than celebrate the birthdays of these two great presidents separately, the third Monday in February has unofficially come to honor both and is known as Presidents' Day.

Call it what you like: Washington's Birthday 2019 and Presidents' Day 2019 are both celebrated today. As such, many American workers have the day off for the holiday, and most schools and banks are closed, as is the post office. But because it's sometimes hard to tell exactly what's open and what's closed on Presidents' Day, we've gathered all the information you need.

Are Banks Closed on Presidents' Day 2019, or Are They Open?

For the most part, banks are closed today for Presidents' Day 2019. Among many others, the branches of major banks like Peoples United Bank, First Citizens Bank, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo are closed on Presidents' Day each year. The vast majority of customers at smaller banks and credit unions will find that their local branches are closed for Presidents' Day 2019 as well.

There are a few exceptions, however, such as TD Bank, which is open with normal business hours on Presidents' Day 2019.

Is the Stock Market Open or Closed Today?

The stock market is closed for trading today. The New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq, and other major U.S. exchanges observe Monday, February 18, 2019, as Washington's Birthday (or Presidents' Day) and are closed accordingly.

Is the Post Office Open or Closed on Presidents' Day?

Washington's Birthday is a postal holiday, and post offices are closed. There is also no mail delivery today because of the holiday.

On the other hand, Federal Express and UPS services and offices are open like usual and deliveries will occur today, even though it's Presidents' Day.

Are Schools Closed on Presidents' Day?

Virtually all public and private schools are closed today in observance of Presidents' Day 2019.

Are Government Offices Open or Closed?

Today is a federal holiday. Non-essential government workers have the day off, and most government offices are closed for Presidents' Day.

Are Restaurants and Stores Open or Closed on Presidents' Day?

With scant few exceptions, stores and restaurants are open on Presidents' Day. In fact, most national stores, including Walmart, Target, Best Buy, and Macy's, are hosting Presidents' Day sales. Online retailers are loaded with Presidents' Day deals too, on items like electronics, mattresses, and more.

Can I File Taxes on Presidents' Day?

Yes. You can file your taxes digitally at any time during tax season, including the Presidents' Day holiday. Be aware, however, that IRS customer service lines are not open on weekends and holidays.

Also, take note that Presidents' Day weekend and the week that follows are particularly busy times for people to file taxes. "The IRS receives more phone calls on the day after Presidents Day than on any other day of the year," an IRS press release says.

So if you need to call the IRS, be warned — and maybe put off your request for help for a few days so you have a better chance of getting through.
