Liberty Home Guard overview

Liberty Home Guard is a New York-based home warranty company operating in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Its plan pricing is on par with most home warranty companies, but it can get costlier if you opt for many of the add-ons it offers.

Pros
  • Offers a large selection of optional add-ons
  • Technicians are "LHG" certified and are thoroughly vetted to operate on the platform
  • 60-day workmanship guarantee
Cons
  • Doesn't cover most appliance accessories like racks or shelves
  • Doesn’t cover commercial equipment or luxury brands.

Liberty Home Guard plans

Liberty Home Guard offers three different coverage plans:

  • Systems Guard plan
  • Appliance Guard plan
  • Total Home Guard plan

The first two plans offer coverage only for systems and appliances, respectively, whereas Total Home Guard covers both.

You can choose to pay annually or monthly for all three plans, but customers who opt for an annual membership get two months for free, meaning you pay for 10 months instead of 12.

Liberty Home Guard lets you choose your own service contractor with previous authorization, a perk few home warranty companies offer. Liberty also has a large network of licensed contractors it can dispatch for service requests.

Liberty has a fixed service call fee of $90 per claim and caps payouts at $2,000 per covered item.

The company doesn’t require inspections of your home systems or appliances to be eligible for coverage. Also, it will cover your appliances and systems regardless of their age.

New customers can request a quote and purchase a home warranty plan completely online. Current customers have access to the Liberty Home Guard app and the online customer portal, which allow you to:

  • File a claim, and view the claim status and history
  • View, renew, or upgrade your policy
  • View your payment history and update your payment information

Liberty Home Guard lets you cancel your policy at any time, however, it charges a $50 cancellation fee when you do.

However, LHG offers a full refund minus any claims paid (and the cancellation fee) if you cancel your policy within the first 30 days. If you cancel after this period, a prorated refund is available.

Third-party ratings

  • Better Business Bureau (BBB): 4.51 out of 5 average based on 2,538 customer reviews.

Customer complaints

The Liberty Home Guard average customer rating on the BBB is fairly high compared to other home warranty companies. Although LHG isn’t currently accredited by the BBB, it has an A rating, which is the second-highest rating the BBB assigns to businesses.

The company has positive customer feedback on various rating websites. Some persistent customer complaints regard issues with:

  • Lengthy claims processing
  • Inability to schedule a visit with contractors and technicians after making a claim
  • Confusion about what is covered versus what is not covered
  • Low coverage caps
  • Constant runaround when customers have complaints or problems with service calls

The research above is based on data that was available at the time of publication.

Liberty Home Guard comparisons

Like Liberty Home Guard, there are other home warranty companies that offer affordable pricing and comprehensive coverage.

Here’s how Liberty Home Guard compares to two other major home warranty companies: American Home Shield and Choice Home Warranty.

Liberty Home Guard vs. American Home Shield

Compared to Liberty Home Guard, American Home Shield stands out for its higher coverage caps for HVAC systems and appliances, though its plans are less customizable because they offer fewer.

American Home Shield offers three tiered plans: ShieldSilver, ShieldGold and ShieldPlatinum, which cover a combination of systems and appliances. Unlike Liberty Home Guard, it doesn’t offer system or appliance-only plans.

American Home Shield covers up to $5,000 for air conditioning and heating systems regardless of the plan you choose, and up to $4,000 per covered appliance for customers enrolled in its premium plan, ShieldPlatinum.

However, American Home Shield’s lower-tiered plans, ShieldSilver and ShieldGold, have a maximum coverage cap of $2,000, the same as what Liberty Home Guard offers for repair, replacement or diagnosis of most covered items.

Liberty Home Guard vs. Choice Home Warranty

One of Choice Home Warranty's main advantages is its affordability. The company features two plans — Basic Plan and Total Plan — with prices ranging from around $46 to $55 a month.

Choice Home Warranty’s plans cover a mix of both home systems and appliances. Unlike Liberty Home Guard, it doesn’t offer system- or appliance-only plans. Instead, Choice’s Basic Plan covers all major appliances and home systems, except for air conditioning, refrigerators, clothes dryers and washers which are part of the Total Plan.

Choice’s optional coverage is limited compared to the more than 40 add-ons Liberty Home Guard lets you include in your home warranty plan. However, Choice lets you add coverage for roof leaks and popular home items, such as pools, standalone freezers and sump pumps.

Choice Home Warranty isn’t accredited with the BBB and, according to its profile, the company currently has a pending government action from the Arizona Attorney General for alleged consumer fraud, including claims of making false promises.
