Brandeis University

Brandeis, located nine miles west of Boston, is the only nonsectarian Jewish-sponsored college or university in the nation. Its enrollment is about 5,500, including 3,600 undergrads, and its student-faculty ratio is about 10:1, and more than half of students at the university are women. Named for the first Jewish U.S. Supreme Court justice Louis D. Brandeis, the school characterizes itself as "a rare combination of a liberal arts college and a global research university." Undergrads in its College of Arts and Sciences have a choice of over 40 majors and 45 minors, and the university says that nearly half of them "pursue a double major, often in fields on opposite ends of the academic spectrum." The truly ambitious, or those who simply want to hedge their bets, can even triple major and triple minor. Located on a 235-acre campus in suburban Waltham, Massachusetts, the campus has over 260 student groups and 17 varsity sports.
