Colorado State University-Fort Collins

Among its bragging points, Colorado State makes much of what it calls its “amazing location” in Fort Collins, a town near the base of the Rocky Mountains and a former first-place finisher in Money's list of “Best Places to Live.” (We singled it out for “great schools, low crime, good jobs…and a fantastic outdoor life.”) The university itself covers nearly 5,000 acres, including the main campus and several satellite campuses. More than 5,000 students, including all freshmen, live on campus. Student organizations abound, with opportunities like the cycling team, the dog agility club, pottery guild and meditation club. On the academic front, Colorado State's eight colleges are home to nearly 26,000 undergrads who get to pick from some 300 academic paths, including programs in fermentation science and technology, horticulture, financial planning, and metalsmithing. Not sure what to choose? No worries -- undeclared students make up about a third of each freshman class.
