CUNY Brooklyn College

CUNY Brooklyn College -- with its classically designed campus, low tuition, and national academic reputation -- is sometimes called the "poor man's Harvard." The college has 82 majors offered through five schools: business, education, humanities and social sciences, natural and behavioral sciences, and visual media and performing arts. Programs include Africana studies, communication sciences and disorders, Puerto Rican and Latino studies, urban sustainability, and more. Brooklyn College also has an honors college offering an array of appealing benefits including full tuition and a laptop. The school boasts a rich mix of nationalities, income levels, and languages in its nearly 18,000-person student body. But the affordability and good academics do come with a price: The college has become increasingly selective, and now admits only about 45% of applicants. Like a handful of other CUNY colleges, Brooklyn College excels at helping students advance up the socioeconomic ladder: Its economic mobility rate is one of the highest in Money's 2020 rankings.
