Longwood University

Founded in 1839 as the Farmville Female Seminary Association, this central Virginia public university’s roots are in teacher education. While its curriculum is broader today, teacher prep is still one of its biggest draws. Students hoping to teach are most likely to enroll in liberal studies, a cross-disciplinary major that combines a classic liberal arts curriculum with professional teacher-training tracks. Other colleges in the university include business and economics, and education and human services, along with an undergrad honors college. Longwood students often pursue internships, research projects, or practicums before graduating, and the school offers an array of opportunities to do so. One popular program, LU@YNP, takes students to Yellowstone National Park to study stewardship of public lands; students can also work on biology, archeology or environmental science programs at Hull Springs Farm, a 662-acre farm about 130 miles away. The James W. Jordan Archeology Field School gives students the chance to participate in archeological research projects. Extracurricular activities include exhibitions and lectures at the Longwood Center for the Visual Arts in downtown Farmville and High Bridge State Park, a nearby rails-to-trails pathway for bicycling, hiking, and horseback riding.
