Salisbury University

Part of Maryland's public college system, Salisbury University's brick buildings and lush grounds give it the feel of a private institution. And no wonder -- the 200-acre campus is home to some of the largest trees in the state and was named a national arboretum in 1988. SU's approximately 7,700 undergrads choose between about 60 programs in the sciences, liberal arts, business, education, social work, and health-related fields. The school is a big supporter of student entrepreneurship. There's a yearly business plan competition named for Salisbury alum and local businessman Richard Bernstein in which winners receive funding; the 2020 victors plan to launch a vegan protein bar line that celebrates diversity. SU offers many opportunities for students to give back to the community, as well. The biggest event occurs every fall, when SU hosts the Sea Gull Century, a bike ride for charity that typically draws some 6,000 cyclists from around the state, including many students and faculty. Located in Southeast Maryland, the school is perfectly placed for folks who love to fish; it's just a half-hour's drive west to the Chesapeake Bay and a 45-minute drive east to the Atlantic Ocean. Meanwhile, aspiring politicians and policy wonks can be in Washington, D.C. in less than two and a half hours.
