University of Rhode Island

The University of Rhode Island has the distinction of being not only a land-grant university, but a sea-grant and urban-grant university as well. Its 10 academic units offer the choice of almost 100 majors, many of them with interdisciplinary approaches. Examples include Africana studies, wildlife and conservation biology, and ocean engineering. One of URI’s standouts is its nursing department, which in addition to a traditional bachelor's degree, also includes an online bachelor's program, master’s programs with a number of specializations, and two doctorate degrees, one focused on clinical practice and the other on research. Students in the university’s five-year international engineering program spend a year abroad and graduate with a degree in engineering and a bachelor's in Chinese, French, Spanish, Italian, or German. Given the school’s sea-grant designation, marine studies are emphasized as well. The graduate school of oceanography is six miles east of campus, overlooking Narragansett Bay; the facility houses the Inner Space Center, which focuses on ocean science exploration and education.
