Over the last seven decades, this New York public university has grown from a small regional school to a leading research institution with a variety of nationally recognized programs.
The university prides itself on a student-centered experience that starts as soon as undergraduates arrive on campus with programs like First-Year Research Immersion, through which STEM students can work on teams with faculty mentors to get experience working on research projects early in their academic career. Binghamton is a hub for lithium-ion battery research and development, while its newly announced New York Center for AI Responsibility and Research will be one of the country's first independent centers focused on research that advances AI for the public good.
Overall, Binghamton offers more than 130 academic programs, with biology, psychology, engineering and economics among the most popular. All students have opportunities to engage in hands-on research and collaborate across disciplines. International education is prioritized, too: The university has robust study-abroad offerings, and its student population includes representation from over 100 other countries. Outside of academic pursuits, students can get involved in a variety of campus clubs, including the Paws and Effect club, which helps local shelter animals, and several dance associations, including ballroom and bhangra.
All that is packaged in an idyllic college setting: Its 930-acre campus in southern New York includes more than 100 acres of nature preserve with all of the school's main academic and administrative buildings grouped in the center, surrounded by a road in the shape of a brain.
