With over 17,000 students, West Chester University is the largest of the 14 institutions that make up the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. The university offers well over 100 graduate and undergraduate programs in the arts and sciences, business and public affairs, social sciences, visual and performing arts, health sciences, and education. The most popular undergrad majors are finance, psychology, and education. Undergrads must complete an extensive series of general education requirements, including classes in composition, communication, science, diverse communities, and the arts, among others. Academic institutes at WCU include the Frederick Douglass Institute, which aims to advance multicultural studies; the Ethnic Studies Institute that organizes seminars on diversity; and the Poetry Center, which hosts a poetry conference every summer. West Chester, a city of about 20,000 people, features a cozy downtown with pizza shops and clothing boutiques, and is about 35 miles away from Philadelphia. But the university has a Center City campus in Philadelphia that offers programs tailored for adult and professional learners. These include bachelor's degrees in social work, business management, and nursing, and master's programs in social work, criminal justice, public administration, and transformative education.
