University of Delaware

The University of Delaware, which traces its history to 1743, is one of the oldest universities in the United States. Today it's a major research university, with more than 150 majors for its nearly 20,000 undergrads -- everything from astronomy to insect ecology and conservation. UD is a land-, sea-, and space-grant university, meaning it commits to researching and teaching fields related to agriculture, marine, and space through an agreement with the U.S. government. (Most universities with such agreements only claim one or two grant titles.) It also has some niche offerings and facilities, such as a world-renowned figure skating training center. The university places high in Money's rankings in part because of its affordability, coming in at just over $100,000 for the net price of a degree. Students also do well when they leave: Alumni report earning an average of $56,200 within a few years of graduation, according to PayScale data. Mindful of the importance of creating global citizens, the University of Delaware helped invent the modern system of collegiate study abroad, when a UD professor created a year-long program in France in 1923. Today, students can study in Thailand, Prague, and Argentina, among other locations.
